Junior Cadets

Ages 8 - 11 years

Our Juniors get involved in many different activities from learning all about the Royal Navy and Nautical subjects to fun educational visits. The main focus is always enjoyment however we also teach our Junior Cadets important values that they will take with them in life and use outside of cadets.

Training Afloat



Our junior cadets are given the opportunity to learn a variety of boating. We currently offer training on the following disciplines:

  • Kayaking

  • Canoeing

  • Powerboating

  • Rowing

Colour Stepping Stones & Advancement

 

Our Junior Cadet advance through the following ranks:

  • Junior Cadet

  • Junior Cadet 2nd Class

  • Junior Cadet 1st Class

  • Leading Junior

 

Junior Cadets also achieve their coloured Stepping stones as detailed below:

  • Green - Land & Field Based Activities

  • Blue - Waterborne and Naval Knowledge

  • Red - Communications and the Services

  • Yellow - Community Engagement

Adventurous Activities

 

Our  Junior Cadets have the chance to get involved in a variety of different Adventurous Activities. These include

 

  • Archery

  • Shooting

  • High Ropes

  • Climbing

  • Mud runs

  • Team Building

  • Orienteering

  • Camp Craft

  • Expedition Training

  • Various Sports

Blue Jackets

Ages 12 - 17 years

As well as partaking in a range of boating activities, our Blue Jacket cadets have the chance to engage in nautical training and traditions of which the Royal Navy have been practicing for centuries. As senior cadets within the unit, they will work towards key roles with increasing responsibilities as they progress through the ranks.

Training Afloat



Within the Blue Jacket Division, cadets are given the opportunity to gain competencies in a variety of boating disciplines including:

 

  • Kayaking

  • Canoeing

  • Powerboating

  • Rowing

  • Bell Boating

  • Windsurfing

  • Paddle Boarding

 

Which provide the cadets with a level of training to gain them nationally recognised qualifications.

Specialisations & Proficiencies

All cadets are given the opportunity to attend courses and work on various subjects based on specialisations within the Royal Navy. Cadets can gain qualifications and progress to more advanced courses in their chosen field.

Marine Cadets

Ages 12 - 17 years

The Marine Cadets will touch on the syllabus of the Blue Jackets, as well as developing subject specific skills based on the training of the Royal Marines. As senior cadets within the unit, they will work towards key roles with increasing responsibilities as they progress through the ranks. 

Field Craft

 

Our Marine Cadets conduct fieldcraft exercises to a high standard, following the up to date training of the Royal Marines.

 

Regular exercises include  

 

  • Advance to contacts

  • Ambush Drills 

  • Anti-Ambush Drills

  • Battle Drills in a Rural Setting

  • Battle Drills in an Urban Setting

 

Our Marine Cadets experience tactical scenarios in sections, where they will be working, patrolling and sleeping under canvas.

Drill & Ceremonial

 

The Marine Cadets are trained to a high standard in Drill. Throughout the year, they will compete to display their impeccable discipline within a squad.

 

This also forms a part of their advancement and a higher standard is expected, as they progress through the ranks. 

Map Reading

 

Orienteering and navigation play an important role within the Marine Cadets. In practice cadets will be tasked to navigate long distances both through the day and night over a series of expeditions.

 

Their training begins with the basics including map care and points of a compass, and further advances through to resections and route cards.
